About the Position: The Department of Sociology at the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in criminology and/or intelligence studies, with expertise in quantitative methods. We welcome applicants from any area within criminology. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in criminology, sociology, or a related discipline, have an active research agenda, and demonstrate evidence of effective teaching or the potential for effective teaching. Scholars whose research and teaching complement or enhance existing strengths in criminological theory, social problems of crime, strategic intelligence, and intelligence analysis will be favorably considered. Candidates with a history of grant funding or the potential for funded research and/or who have practical experience in intelligence analysis or a related field are especially encouraged to apply.

 

Primary responsibilities: Tenure-track assistant professors are expected to develop and maintain an active research program that includes undergraduate students and is commensurate with the needs and resources of the department. The teaching load is three courses per semester and will regularly include Introduction to Criminology, Social Statistics, and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Service to the institution, including participation in College and University-level committees, is expected. The department is well served by centralized advising.

 

Required qualifications for tenure-track assistant professor:

  1. A PhD in criminology, sociology, or a related field completed by August 1, 2025. JD/LLM, and applicants without a PhD who have equivalent professional work experience may also be considered.
  2. Evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction.
  3. Evidence of active research and scholarship in criminology and/or intelligence studies.

 

Salary and rank: Commensurate with experience
